Back to School

August is here—and with it comes the familiar whirlwind of school supply shopping, new routines, and maybe a few butterflies in your teen’s stomach. For many teens, especially those on the autism spectrum, the return to school can feel overwhelming. New teachers, new schedules, and unfamiliar environments can trigger anxiety and stress.

Here are some simple ways you can help ease the transition:

Start the Routine Early

Begin shifting wake-up, mealtime, and bedtime routines at least two weeks before school starts. Consistency builds confidence—and practicing ahead of time makes the first week smoother.

Tour the School

If possible, schedule a walk-through. Let your teen find their locker, classrooms, and cafeteria. Bonus tip: take photos to review at home and build familiarity.

Talk Through What to Expect

Review their daily schedule together. Go over classroom changes, new expectations, and talk through what a typical day might look like. Role-play conversations or challenges they might face.

Build a Coping Toolkit

Create a small sensory or calming kit for your teen to keep in their backpack. Things like a stress ball, fidget tool, or calming affirmations can be great go-to tools when anxiety spikes.

Keep Talking

Check in regularly—but gently. Ask things like “What was the best part of today?” or “Was anything harder than expected?” to keep the conversation flowing without pressure.

Celebrate the Wins

Every brave moment matters. Whether it’s remembering a schedule or introducing themselves to a new teacher—celebrate it. Confidence grows with encouragement.
